THE MUNICIPAL CHARITIES OF DOVER AND THE DOVER ALMSHOUSE CHARITY

The Municipal Charities of Dover is a long-established registered local charity which provides affordable housing for people in need, who are residents of the old Borough of Dover and surrounding parishes.

Almshouses are unfurnished dwellings, usually specifically designed with the needs of older people in mind. They provide convenient and comfortable accommodation in a setting, which allows residents to come and go as they please.

The almshouses are situated within a very short distance of Dover town centre, close to bus routes and the seafront.   Like much of Dover, the complex is built on a steep slope and some of the properties are accessed by slopes, steps and stairs.  Only Albany House has a passenger lift.

The almshouse properties are self-contained and unfurnished.  They are suitable for independent older people in reasonable health who are capable of looking after themselves, but nevertheless appreciate the security of a gated community and an emergency call system if they are taken ill.

The Municipal Charities actively encourages the independence of the residents but also ensures they are well-supported by their families and social services when needed.  The Scheme Manager is able to provide advice on sources of additional support, if required, but the Charity does not provide personal care or nursing care, meals, transport or help with housework.
